Stress and anxiety: neurobiological

Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent psychiatric diseases in the West, with the highest lifetime prevalence estimates (13.6–28.8%) and the earliest age of onset (11 years) of psychiatric disorders. Patients with anxiety disorders also frequently present with other comorbid diseases, including depression, substance abuse, gastrointestinal disease, asthma, cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic pain, hypertension and migraine. Anxiety disorders are therefore a major healthcare burden. Despite the development of powerful brain imaging technology and strategies such as the use of endophenotypes, the pathogenesis of anxiety disorders still remains to be elucidated.
